How to make your own saddle cover?


I would like to sew a saddle cover to protect my western saddle when i’m not using it. Are there any free patterns out there to do this? If not, how would you recommend doing this from scratch? I was thinking of putting elastic on the bottom to hold it on. What type of fabric should i use? (I have a 14 inch barrel saddle)

My grandma made a tracing of the saddle, she put white paper down on a saddle rack and put the saddle on top. She added a 4 or 5 inches to the outline so it would be able to fit over the cantle and pommel still. Then she took a thin elastic string and put that around the outline and made a small fold over the elastic and sewed it in. At least I’m pretty sure that’s what she did, she even made a perfectly fit cover for my side saddle!

For fabric she used something kind of plastic-y. Kind of like the outside of a horses rain blanket, it keeps the moisture off it.
