any advice on jewellery making for beginners?

anyone know of some good books for beginners and also cheapest places for tools etc

being honest I have never bought a jewellery book, they are pricey and often you don’t get a chance to read them before you buy and then find you’ll never use them.

The best place is the most obviouc but not necessarily the one you think of first. Try your local library, they may not have books in stock but they may have them in other local libraries within your county, you can then request them to be transferred to your local library. Average cost is 20p for a book to be reserved. Plus you can read and return if if isn’t helpful.

My favourite source is youtube. You can learn pretty much any technique on there, if one video doesn’t suit you keep going. I find it a great source to learn new or different techniques.

I tend to buy my supplies online, there are 2 local shops but you don’t get claue for money, you can pick up the odd nice gem, but not the day to day stuff. One in Bristol [shineyrocks] and one in Bath [bijoubeads] both have there own websites. I use eBay most of the time for beads, sanctuarybeads are a good seller, great postage rates and good quality beads. I also like jillybeads online, very nice people and ever so helpful. There cheapy pliers are okay for most things, not so good on memory wire, but then £4 on a pair of memorywire snippers on eBay is a better investment, with the first cut on normal ‘soft’ pliers they are damaged.

I also started a coffee afternoon once a month with a few friends and it’s spread out, we now have around 30 attendees, varying from teenage girls and boys to the retired folk of the community. We are sorting out a new place to meet, at the moment a local pub has agreed to allow us use of their skittle alley for a small fee. We tend to bring along some projects we are doing, and pass on skills or learn new ones. Some just come for the coffee and chat. We shall be getting a site up soon advertising our group. We are just outside of Midsomer Norton, Somerset.
