How do I begin to research vintage fabric selection for a sewing project?
I’d like to sew 1954, 1955 and 1956 vintage patterns using authentic fabrics, prints and/or textures. The reproduction pattern packaging from 2010 and 2011 suggests broadcloth, taffeta, shantung, faille and damask. I’ve seen professional samples of the dresses out of some of these fabrics and it just doesn’t have that true 1950s look. It’s just not convincing.
The patterns are Butterick patterns: B5605, B5556 and Vogue pattern V8687.
And you may not find anything but close.
Manufacturing processes and even the country or origin is not the same as in the 1950s. Back then no one would buy anything from a middle eastern country. The Korean War was ending and WWII was still very fresh in the minds of many families.
