What types of crafts / jewelry can you make with a soldering torch / iron? Which one should you get?

My girlfriend is very much into a) DIY jewelry, among other things making jewelry by bending wire, and b) anything that’s loud, bright or vaguely dangerous.

For the above reasons, I considered buying her a gas torch as a present, so she could take her jewelry-making to the next level and indulge her pyromaniac nature at the same time.

Since neither I nor she have any clue about making crafts/jewelry in this way, I wanted to ask if anybody can recommend books or websites on the topic.

I also wanted to ask what kind of torch to buy. First of all, would you recommend a gas torch or a soldering iron? I’ve found the “Dremel Hobby VersaTip Gas Torch”, which seems nice for my purposes. Any ideas / suggestions?

Ahhh, more toys for the Jewelry Designer!! The torch you mention would work great for making soldered jewelry, even filligree as seen in ” Silver Threads” which is an AWESOME book, with plenty of projects. If you want her to be able to melt glass, you will need a bigger torch, like a hothead, glass rods, and a kiln to anneal the beads. If that’s something you are interested in, I can give sources for the glass, kiln, etc.
There’s always, polymer clay, and Art Clay. Polymer Clay can just be baked in a toaster oven, but with Art Clay, you can use a torch to turn this special clay into a piece of fine silver, which is pretty cool.
A gift certificate would be a good addition to the torch, because she is going to want wire, tools, etc. A couple of places I recommend are Fire Mountain Gems, Rings & Things, and Shipwreck Beads.
Good luck, and if I can be of any more help, just contact me!
