Sewing pattern Sizes???
I just can’t seem to get it right with pattern sizes.
My measurements put me at a 32W (in all different brands), but they never work. I’ve learned to baste the garment first, or try with cheap material, but I end up swimming in the garment.
I also started buying patterns by going on the “finished measurments” listed on the back of some patterns, these also come out way too big.
I am tired of buying the patterns that say they will fit, and having them end up big enough to cover my couch (I am not kidding). I am an experianced sewer, I know I am measuring, cutting, and sewing correctly.
Does anyone have any hints, any explanations why the patterns never fit. Should I just buy a pattern the same as my dress size (even though the measurments are way below mine). The difference is far more than allowing for shrinkage and fit.
Help!
Perhaps you’d have better luck with patterns designed for the plus size body instead of “blown up” from a smaller Misses size pattern. The “blowing up” process is part of why sleeves are too long and shoulders are too wide……….I’ve noticed that what is supposed to fit my bust shows both bra straps because the neckline is too wide and the seams for the sleeves are two inches or more down my arm………….
You can try to pick up a Butterick pattern by Connie or a Vogue pattern by Sandra Betzina the next time there is a sale at your local fabric store.
EBay might have some of the Rita Farro patterns by Stretch & Sew that were put out in the 1990s – the designs were basic enough to adjust to “today’s looks” by using the currently fashionable fabrics and colors.
Kwik Sew had a few larger size patterns as well.
Petite Plus Patterns designs for the plus size woman five feet four inches and under – but I have heard of people buying the patterns then cutting them across the “lengthen and shorten here” lines and spreading them to allow for being taller.
There are also books on fitting and pattern alterations by Palmer & Pletsch (more recently Palmer & Alto), Barbara Deckert, Nancy Zieman, Ruth Oblander, Rita Farro, Gail Grigg Hazen, Sandra Betzina, and Connie Amaden Crawford that offer tips on selecting silhouettes, style lines, fabrics, and such as well as fitting the pattern and then adjusting the fit as you sew after the fabric is cut out.
