Is it difficult to sew clothing from a pattern?

I have never sewn before or used a pattern, but I learn pretty quickly. On a scale of 1-10, how hard is it to learn how to sew and use a simple pattern? I want to make some cute sundresses for my daughters this summer.
Oh, I meant with a sewing machine and a few yards of fabric! Sorry for the confusion.

On a scale of 1-10, sewing is a 5. BUT more importantly, IT IS FUN
And it is glorious to be able to have a say in what my kids wear, beyond picking the best that the retailers have to offer at that moment. For many things, I learned that it was faster in many cases to make a garment than to search for the one in the right color, size and price!!!

Tips: Read the directions, Reread the directions, then read them again.
Sure this sounds fussy, but, it will mean that the pattern starts to translate itself into your head. And as you work, you will know why you are doing things in a particular order, or how really important it is to “mark” a spot in a particular way because you will see where it is needed later.

Kids clothes are perfect projects for beginners.
Kids outgrow our mistakes!!!
And they need lots of clothes – that means lots of practice.
In the beginning, if I liked a pattern, like a simple top, I would make 4 or 5 of them,
Then I learned that if I made 1 or 2 and just ran the washer a bit more often, the result was the same- plus kids often have favorites that they prefer to wear everyday. And most kids do not have hang ups about friends seeing them in the same outfit twice in the same week.

When my kids were young, I usually did not have extended periods of time to focus. Having read the patterns several times made stopping and starting easier. I could tell that the next stage was a 10 minute part and if I had ONLY 10 minutes, I could still make progress ( I learned that in the time it took for the spaghetti water to boil, I could pin a seam) One very important lesson: I only cut and laid out patterns and cut fabric at those times when I had the necessary quiet time – usually AFTER the kids were in bed. Interruptions at those times could be disastrous.

Sundresses do not have a lot of parts, so fewer seams. They look good in cottons- easy for beginners.
Even if the fabric says no shrinkage, I always washed, dried and if needed pressed it before cutting. I learned that made smoother seams. If you are using poy blends that may not be necessary. And some sewers don’t prewash cotton.
Buy the pattern, and buy all the notions at the same time. Make sure you have the correct needles for your machine. ( If you haven’t used the machine before, or in a while, use some scrap fabrics and just run some lines or seams to make sure it is running well and that you are comfortable with threading and making bobbins, whatever features your machine offers. When I started I had a VERY old machine that did one stitch! Having fewer choices kept me focused on the garment. When I look back, I am amazed at how much I made on that machine before I traded up. By the time I got the new machine, I had a good grasp of the features I wanted and would actually be using. That machine is still going strong, many grandkids later.)
