Sewing, making your own patters and medieval dresses?
I love History and I am also a very creative person. I love to draw and create things. Now I would like to take up the hobby of sewing and would like to combine it with my love of the medieval.
Here are my questions:
How do you take measurements of a person? What all do you have to measure?
What type of sewing machine should I get?
How do I make my own patters? Due to my very imaginative ideas I could never find a pattern that would match my imagination:)
Would I need one of those fitting dummies that people use to sew a dress around? You may or may not know what I am talking about.
Since I cannot make my own fabric designs, where is a good place to beautiful fabric that would make a medieval dress look spectacular?
Any other helpful advice is more than welcome.
Use a tape measurer to measure a person. You can get these at the dollar store in a little sewing kit. They’re SO handy. There is a website that helps you create a custom corset pattern….google the term custom corset generator and you should find it. The gal gives you instructions on how to measure yourself, you punch in your number and it generates a series of pictures for you to copy on a large piece of paper to make your own corset and it’s WAAAY simple!
You’ll want to find a machine that states it can handle HEAVY FABRICS like denim and such. I once had a really expensive Jenome machine but it could hardly get through tough fabric while my $99 el-cheapo SImplicity machine chows right through canvas with no effort!
Joann fabric stores offer beginner sewing classes which are cheap aand totally worth it!
I started making midieval costumes when I was in elementaryy and I found that it does help to have a sewing dummy but if you have a round tapered laundry basket and stack it on a chair, this works fine as well for the skirt.
I suggest you make a dress or two from a PATTERN and then make one but ALTER the pattern a bit to add or take away something. Once you feel comfortable altering patterns then you can understand how to create your own. ![]()
I LOVE shopping at those outlet places that sell fabric for home decor….heavy velvets and brocade are wonderful.
