Question for sewing experts about Sally costume?
I’m planning my next Halloween costume. I want to sew a patchwork dress like Saly’s from The Nightmare Before Christmas. I’m a perfectionist, so I want it to look authentic. The dress pattern I have is designed so that the seams are along the side. However, for Sally’s dress, there are seams in “random” places. What should I do to make it work? Make a mock-up and sew fabric pieces over it? Or is there something I can do to the dress pattern?
First of all you do not say if you are an experienced seamstress or relatively new to sewing. second is the pattern disposable to you or not.
I make my children and grand children’s costumes every year. If I was making this costume I would use a turtle neck with the extra long sleeves for the arms and use a permanent marker for the stitching marks on the neck and arms.
It will be much easier to do side seams in the costume
lay your pattern out draw on the pattern itself. (if this is disposable to you) where you want your different pattern fabric to go. cut the pieces apart. As you cut them apart you will have to mark each one such as right bodice, left bodice bottom right skirt, etc you will basically be putting a puzzle together as you sew. Don’t try to cut the hem or the sleeve hem till you are all finished.
Take the pieces of the pattern and lay them out on the desired fabric to match the costume. ( Good luck trying to find all those fabrics in 1 place.)
After laying the pattern pieces out on the fabric pin them securely.
Cut each piece so you have a 1/2 inch seam allowance on all sides this is because your dress pattern is your size and if you skip this step the dress will be to small.
Take each front piece and sew together, sew all the back pieces together. Sew your shoulder seams together, now add your sleeves easing them in so as not to pucker. Now you can sew the side seams and sleeves at the same time. Now you can just cut your hem like in the costume and cut your hem in the sleeve. I wouldn’t try to hem them just leave them jagged and your costume can slide right over your turtle neck. Next take your permanent marker and draw the seam markings indicating hand sewing and you should have a complete sally costume.
Good luck! I hope this helped
