Precious Metal Clay is a fairly simple way to start. Fire Mountain Gems carries it. It’s not cheap, asit is real silver or gold, but looks quite nice once you’ve got the hang of it.

A less expensive way to get into jewelry making would be with wire. Get some practice wire first, like what you’d find at Michaels, and play with it. There are free patterns at a particular site whose address I’ve forgotten. (I signed up for a newsletter, so I get emails from them all the time, so just click on the link in the email and don’t need to know the address.) If you use Google or Dogpile and type in “Preston Reuther” that site will certainly come up. Its name is something about wire-worker, but I don’t recall the punctuation and all that. He has a free course — very simple — and several starter kits with more instructions available on the site. Have a look and see if that’s the way you might want to go. The patterns are free to anyone, whether you shop there or not.

I’ve been making jewelry for a few years now, using wire and/or beads, and thoroughly enjoy it. Fire Mountain has some free patterns, but they’re mostly for beading, I think.
