Time required to sew a wedding gown?
I have sewn several wedding gowns over the years of all shapes and sizes. I even made my own all those years ago.
However, all of these were made in my spare time over many months so I truly do not know how long it took me to create each of them.
Now my daughter has annouced that she is getting married 4 weeks from now! And she asked me to make her dress. She picked a beautiful pattern which I am most capable of making.
How much time should I allot for this? I am no longer working so I have most of the day. But I do also have to make the floral arrangements and help her make her plans. About how many hours over all would you say this would take? I already have the fabrics.
Thank you
I designed the pattern myself, don’t have a digital picture. But it is very similar to McCall M4714 http://www.mccallpattern.com/item/M4714.htm??tab=evening_prom_bridal&page=2

Actual labor is probably 6 to 8 hours, but that’ll be greatly interrupted by fittings, trips to the store for something you forgot (interfacing? zipper? hem tape?? etc.), ripping out mistakes, fidgeting with machines and winding bobbins, etc.
To be on the safe side, I’d budget up to a week because you have the luxury of “walking away” if something becomes frustrating.
I usually break my projects down – a day for prepping the fabric (wash if applicable, iron if needed, etc) and cutting out the pattern. Then the next day I’ll assemble the major seams and fit it (dressform or person) before marking where to set the zipper (or whatever closure). Third day I’ll construct the lining and drop it in. Then finally the hem and other details – like any beadwork, buttoning, etc.
Reminder – make sure all fittings are with the same undergarments and shoes she intends to wear with the dress. Control-top pantyhose and bras can change a figure enough to make a difference. Shoes can affect posture in addition to hem length.
