Can I use fleece in a pattern if it’s not listed in the fabrics to use?


I bought a ‘Sew Easy’ pattern from Wal-Mart yesterday for a pair of mens or womans pajama pants. It says to use cotton or cotton blends. Would it be OK if I used fleece instead? I don’t see why it would cause a problem but I am still a beginner so I thought I would ask for advice.

Also, are there any special instructions for working with fleece? I’d like to whip up some PJ’s as Christmas presents.

No problem. The fleece will be warmer than cotton or flannel.

FYI – flannel is popular for winter pjs, but it has to be pre-washed and dried a couple of times before cutting the pattern as it shrinks a lot.

Fleece does not shrink, easy to wash (warm) and dry (about 15 minutes on med heat).

You do have to clean the bobbin area more often when sewing with flannel, fleece or any other napped material.

No special needle is needed for fleece – it is made from recycled plastic, so if you need to press, use a warm iron and press cloth (old pillowcase or tea towel).
