Clasps For Jewelry Making

For those of you who make real jewelry?

I’m thinking about making necklaces, bracelets, etc…and I’m going to use real gemstone beads for my work. I was wondering whether I should use thick string, metal chains with clasps, or something I haven’t thought of. What would look the classiest? Thank you for your help.

It depends on the style. I use a lot of semi-precious gemstones (chips, mostly, but not entirely) and glass, and for basic stringing, I like tigertail. It’s coated flexible wire, and I’ve seen it in multiple colors. You feed it through the loop on the clasp and crimp it into place. Any good book on beading or a bead shop should be able to give better directions than I just did, though. Beadalon is a decent brand. Silk cord to show off a pendent or knotted to hold beads in place is nice, too.
I tend to agree that your findings such as clasps and crimps should be good quality metal, at the very least steel plated in gold or silver, pewter, or better; again, depending on what you’re making. Same for if you’re using chain–go for silver chain or possibly gold-plated unless you can afford the good stuff. Just note the quality of silver and karat of the gold if you’re selling or giving as gifts–people will ask, and allergies are a serious issue.
